Lira Demonstrators Petition IGG over Corruption

A group of demonstrators in Lira town have this afternoon petitioned the Inspector General of Government, seeking to sack Franco Ojur, the district LC5 from his office.

The Lira LC5 chairperson Franco Ojur is accused of misappropriating public funds. It is claimed that he diverted money from the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund and the National Agricultural Advisory Services for personal gain.

More than 300 people have appended their signatures to the petition which marked the climax of the demonstrations organized to protest against corruption.

Ojur is also accused of taking over the district property, like official vehicles, which he uses for his personal business. He is also accused of abuse of office by awarding a road construction project to his wife and his in-laws.

The 6km stretch of road at Abedober parish in Apac district cost the district 33 million shillings.

The petitioners also accuse Ojur of creating 6 animal traction projects in Abako sub county- using different company names.

The petitioners want the chairman and his executives investigated and prosecuted. Demonstrators held placards reading ighost teachers and projects belong to corrupt leadersi, iCourt should jail Franco Ojuri, among others.

Last week, Ojur was in and out of police custody both in Lira and Kampala to record statements related to the misappropriated funds.
