Lira Municipality Suspends New Boda Boda Levy

Now, Morris Odung Omara, the Mayor Lira Municipality says they have decided to suspend the boda boda fees because the riders were not consulted

Lira municipality has suspended the annual boda boda operating fees. Boda boda operators in Lira municipality have been paying shillings 30,000.

Early this year, Lira municipal council hiked the annual boda boda fees from shillings 30,000 to 60,000 drawing protests from the riders.

Now, Morris Odung Omara, the Mayor Lira Municipality says they have decided to suspend the boda boda fees because the riders were not consulted.

Moses Okori, the chairperson Lira motorcycle Boda boda operators faults the municipality for rushing to implement yet the riders were not involved.  He says there is need for more time to consult the riders. 

Jimmy Odongo, another operator wants the municipality to maintain the old rate saying unfair taxation will eat into their little profit. He says currently they pay shillings 47,000 for insurance on top of hiring the motorcycle at shillings 50,000 each week. 

Lira Municipal council intends to generate an estimate of 90 million shillings from about 1,500 riders as part of local revenue collection.
