Jonathan Odur, an opposition politician facing charges of inciting violence and assaulting some NRM officials in Lira is demanding the removal of senior police officials in the district. Odur has petitioned the Inspector General of Police and Professional Standards Unit to remove Richard Aruk Maruk, the Central North Regional Police Commander and Lira District Police Commander Ashraf Chemonges.

It all started on February 11th 2014 when Odur was arrested brutally as he attempted to lead a procession through Lira town shortly after appearing before the magistrate’s court. Odur was dragged to Lira central police station, where he was charged with staging an illegal assembly and disobeying lawful orders and was released on police bond.

However, Odur claims that during his arrest, cops stole his money amounting to 2 million shillings.  Odur wants Richard Aruk Maruk, the Central North Regional Police Commander and Lira District Police Commander Ashraf Chemonges forced to refund his money and be transferred from the district.

Odur accuses the cops of working under the orders of his rival Sam Engola, the Erute South MP to harass him and his supporters.

Charles Angiro Gutmoi, a resident of Lira town says they will not hesitate to drag the cops to court as individuals should the Inspector General of Police fail to address their complaints. But Manshur Suwed Central North police spokesperson denies the allegations many by Odur against the cops and advises him to follow procedures if he has any issues against the duo.

He wonders how police could steal Odur’s money during an operation. In December 2013, Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police removed former Lira DPC Robert Ssemata following protests from the public over the escalation of gun crime targeting business people.
