Lira Regional Referral Hospital Gets New OPD, Casaulty Unit

The construction was co-funded by the Government of Uganda and the Government of Japan as part of the government’s initiative to rehabilitate Regional Referral Hospitals in Northern Uganda.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital has received facilities worth 33 Billion Shillings.

The facilities includes a well-furnished Out Patient Department (OPD), Labor suite, casualty unit, a theatre, three dental units and a maternity ward equipped with 6 delivery beds

The others include an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) unit, a specialized unit for mothers and children and a standard x-ray machine. The hospital also received a new Ambulance from the Government of Japan.

The construction was co-funded by the Government of Uganda and the Government of Japan as part of the government’s initiative to rehabilitate Regional Referral Hospitals in Northern Uganda.

While receiving the facility on Tuesday from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, the Minister of health implored the medical workers to protect and safeguard the new facilities.

Dr Henry Mwebesa, the Director-General at the Ministry advised medical workers to desist from referring patients with minor cases to Mulago National Referral Hospital. He said that Lira Regional Referral Hospital has the best facility to handle almost all cases.

Mwebesa also said that specialists that include radiologists, dental surgeons and senior biomedical engineers will be recruited to improve health services at the hospital.

Dr Stephen Obbo, the Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital says that the new facility will improve service delivery in the sub-region by boosting patients’ confidentially as well as solving the challenge of inadequate space.

Dr Fred Nyangkori, the Chairperson of Board of Directors Lira Regional Referral Hospital advised the health workers to take good care of the facilities. He also highlighted the need for the hospital to have a private wing.

Sam Atul, the Lira City Mayor tasked the hospital to employ a guide who will help patients access the new facility with ease.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital serves an average of 235,000 out-patients, 23,000 in-patients and an average of 5,700 deliveries per year.
