Last year,
Al Nuami Group and Abubakar Technical Services were awarded a 37 billion
shillings contract to construct a children’s park, and make improvements on
existing roads including Note-Ber road, Olwol road, and Boundary Road, Obangakene,
Aber road, and Coronation Park.
The work was supposed to have been completed in a period of 15 months which has
elapsed but works are incomplete.
A source from the City Council says the contract period has been extended to
enable the consultant to produce a comprehensive report on the work done so far
since the council has only received half of the report submitted.
“Because the contract was ending on 9th August.2022, and the consultant has not
submitted his report, I requested the contractor’s committee to make an
extension and so this contract has been extended for 45 days as we wait for the
consultant's comprehensive report.”
According to the source, terminating the contract would not only waste time in
case the contractors put an injunction against their contract termination but
also costly for Lira City to advertise and acquire a new contractor.
Sharon Dilish Apio, the spokesperson for Abubakar Technical Services says the team is on the ground and work is going on.
Sheila Naturinda, the USMID Communications Specialist said that a decision on
the next course of action will be taken during a meeting that will be held next
week.
Last month, Patrick Ogweng, the Deputy City Clerk said the contractor had
already submitted a request for a contract extension and it was waiting for its
approval from the Project Management System (PMS).
