Lodonga Minor Basilica Marks 60 Years of Existence

Presiding over the celebrations, Rt. Rev. Sabino Ochan Odoki, the Bishop of Arua Diocese said the Basilica is a special gift from God for the diocese of Arua, Uganda and Africa as a whole. Bishop Sabino urged Christians to pray and uphold their faith in the Blessed Virgin Mary who intercedes for the universal church.

Pomp and colour filled Lodonga Minor Basilica in Yumbe District on Saturday as hundreds of Christians and people of Good Will converged to mark its 60 years of existence.    

The celebrations climaxed with a series of prayer and other pastoral activities organized by Lodonga Parish and Arua Diocese. Pope John Paul conferred the status of Basilica on Lodonga on May 26th, 1961 after Mother Mary reportedly appeared on a palm tree at the site where the stands.    

Presiding over the celebrations, Rt. Rev. Sabino Ochan Odoki, the Bishop of Arua Diocese said the Basilica is a special gift from God for the diocese of Arua, Uganda and Africa as a whole. Bishop Sabino urged Christians to pray and uphold their faith in the Blessed Virgin Mary who intercedes for the universal church.

Dr. Jacinto Amandua, the chairperson of Kampala Lugbara Catholic Association-KALUCA, who led the team from Kampala to the celebrations, urged Christians in their various capacity to work and promote the cause of Lodonga Minor Basilica.

  Some of the Christians who participated in the celebrations expressed gratitude for the blessings of the Virgin Mary and called for peace and unity in the diocese.

      The Superior General of the Comboni Missionaries in Uganda, Rev. Fr. Achiles Kiwanuka hailed the Comboni Missionaries who laid the foundation of the Catholic faith in West Nile for rooting the faith in the region. He cited the late Fr. Bernado Satori, who played a key role in elevating Lodonga to Basilica.  

He urged Christians to emulate the example of the Comboni Missionaries who left a good legacy of pioneering evangelization in Uganda.
