LRRH Still Transporting Refilled Oxygen Cylinders from Kampala

Although the hospital has an oxygen plant, its production does not match the demand especially during the surge of COVID_19. The current plant which has the capacity to produce 30 oxygen cylinders is now producing at least 25 yet the unit uses approximately 60 cylinders per day.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital is transporting oxygen cylinders from Kampala to meet the oxygen demand at the COVID-19 treatment Unit.

Although the hospital has an oxygen plant, its production does not match the demand especially during the surge of COVID_19. The current plant which has the capacity to produce 30 oxygen cylinders is now producing at least 25 yet the unit uses approximately 60 cylinders per day.

Fred Ariongo, a senior Medical Laboratory Technologist and a member of the Lab and surveillance team disclosed that the hospital is struggling to take care of its clients due to lack of oxygen.

Dr. Stephen Obbo Olweny, the hospital Director said the hospital is in need of a new oxygen plant. He explained that the current plant is being forced to produce more cylinders beyond its capacity which then resulted into tear and ware.

“We need an extra oxygen plant with a much bigger capacity than this one because by the time this one was installed, we did not have COVID-19 in mind so we are waiting for that.”

He also urged the Ministry of Health to train technicians who can at the meantime be fixing the plant when need arises.

Meanwhwile, Judith Namirimu Polah, the Senior Principal Nursing Officer in charge the treatment center says the new oxygen plant should be one which can produce medical air because the current does not have the machine to filter the available oxygen into medical air.

Medical air compressors also known as source equipment, create this specialized air. The equipment contains specific, state-of-the-art components that compress, process and produce clean, dry, medical air.

Medical air refers to a clean supply of compressed air used in hospitals and healthcare facilities to distribute medical gas. It is free of contamination and particles, has no oil or odors, and is dry to prevent water buildup in the facility's pipeline.

The air is used for driving ventilators and incubators by providing uncontaminated and controlled air flows helping to reduce high concentration of oxygen exposure.
