Gerald Ssenyondo, the LCIII Chairperson for Lukaya Town Council has rejected a proposal to elevate the town council to municipality status.

Last month, a section of councillors led by Edris Kigozi, a representative of the elderly persons tabled before the council a draft motion seeking the elevation of Lukaya Town Council to a municipality.

In the motion, Kigozi indicates that the move is aimed at improving the level of service delivery in the area through attracting more direct funding from the central government.

He also says that Lukaya town council fulfills the requirements for elevation to a Municipal Council, citing the increasing population and expansion of the infrastructure.

However, Ssenyondo has strongly objected to the proposal, describing it as a selfish move by a few politicians who are after creating new elective positions.

He has asked the council Speaker to halt debate of the motion arguing that it was misguided and rushed without prior consultation with the stakeholders.

Ssenyondo says the elevation of the town at the moment will instead strain residents in the area.
