Luweero district, which was recently listed by the Ministry of Health among the high-risk Covid-19 areas, has finally received over four hundred thousand government facemasks.

Mariam Kagaiga, the Luweero District Covid-19 Task Force chairperson who is also the Luweero Acting Resident District Commissioner [RDC] has revealed that last week, they received an assortment 415,271 facemasks.

AT the launch of the distribution of the facemasks to 606 villages across the district on Monday, the Acting RDC said that the district's truck loaded with the facemasks has left to deliver them to the 10 Sub Counties and the three town councils in the district namely Luweero, Wobulenzi  and Bombo.

She explains that it’s from the Sub Counties that they will again be moved by the Sub County Chiefs down to the villages.   According to Kagaiga, each Local Council 1 chairperson is to take the responsibility of ensuring that each resident above the age of 6 in their jurisdiction gets a facemask. This will be done by moving door - to- door and each beneficiary will have to be registered on a form.

Flagging off the distribution at the Luweero district headquarters, Kagaiga has said that the exercise is likely to see unscrupulous village bosses who might take advantage of unsuspecting locals and demand that they first pay for the facemasks.   She has thus asked the residents to arrest any who act like that and hand them over to police:

Dr. Innocent Nkonwa, the Luweero District Health Officer [DHO] has said that the facemasks have come at a time when the district has so far registered more than 40 Covid-19 positive cases.   Asking the local populace to take the Covid-19 pandemic more seriously, he says the facemasks are to be of much help because the location of Luweero makes it more prone to faster spread of any contagion:

Kakookolo village LC 1 Chairman in Luweero Town Council, George William Namugera asks government to ensure that it supplies enough facemasks saying that as people tasked to reach the beneficiaries, it will be disturbing to give some & have others left out:
