The 10 casualties in a fatal road accident that occurred last night after a taxi registration number UAK 905A rammed into a charcoal truck at Kalule about 25 kilometres into Luweero district, along Kampala-Gulu highway have been identified by police.

Caesar Asiimwe, the officer in charge of traffic at Bombo police station, says that the accident claimed the life of Betty Nakandi on the spot, leaving 9 others hospitalised with severe injuries. They were transported to Bombo Military Hospital and Mulago Referral Hospital.

Asiimwe explains that the accident occurred as the taxi driver tried to overtake the charcoal truck. The taxi driver lost control and rammed into the truck's rear end. The taxi then veered off the road and overturned.

No one was able to capture the number plate of the truck as it proceeded to its destination. Both vehicles were on their way to Kampala from Luweero.

Asiimwe identifies the injured as Sandra Mediva (20),Caroline Nangeni (19), Francis Friday (36), Kenneth Kayemba (12), Margret Sekande (45), Evelyn Nambuye (22), Kasim Kafuko (19), Evelyn Night (29) and Willy Kato (33)

Police was not able to put an exact number to how many passengers were in the taxi as the driver fled the scene.

However, Asiimwe says that one of the survivor’s 12-year-old Kenneth Kayemba told police that the taxi was over loaded.

Asiimwe says that those who were not seriously injured also simply got out of the taxi to find other means of transport to Kampala. This makes it harder to ascertain exactly how many people were travelling in the taxi.

The accident comes shortly after another in which 10 people were critically injured after a bus collided with a trailer last Monday at Kikubajinja in Luweero along the same highway.

The wreckage of the taxi has been towed to Bombo police station.
