Lwengo Boy, 13, Drowns In Community Pond

The deceased has been identified as Jonathan Ssemwogere, a resident of Kyassonko village, Busubi parish, Kisekka sub-county. The incident happened today leaving the community members shocked.

Police in Lwengo district are investigating the death of a 13-year-old said to have drowned in a community pond.  

The deceased has been identified as Jonathan Ssemwogere, a resident of Kyassonko village, Busubi parish, Kisekka sub-county. The incident happened today, leaving the community members shocked.   

It is said that Ssemwogerere, a bricklayer, had gone to collect water when he decided to cool off in the pond where he drowned.   

According to Jeremy Ssemuli, the Kyassonko LCI chairperson, residents who had gone to fetch water from the pond found his body floating. He says this is the first drowning incident in the area.      

Gerald Kikkomeko, a resident says several children have been rescued from these same ponds and cautioned not to swim in it but their counsel is generally ignored. 


The police were called to the scene to retrieve the body, and it was given to the family members for burial. 

Muhammad Nsubuga, the Southern Region Police spokesperson, says investigations have kicked on and cautioned parents to be watchful of their children to avoid similar incidents.
