The Lyantonde District NRM party Chairperson, Elia Ssewandigi has pulled out of the primary elections for the town council chairperson.

Ssewandigi was facing competition from his son Paul Ssekandi and the incumbent Lyantonde Town Council Chairperson, Mustafa Kalule for the NRM party flag. He, however, says he decided to withdraw from the primaries because of strong personal and family reasons.

Ssewandigi, the former Town Council chairperson, lost the office to Kalule in the 2016 elections.  He had vowed to unseat Kalule and recover his seat. His exit leaves his son; Ssekandi and Kalule in the race, which is expected to be very competitive.

But Kalule says Ssewandigi pulled from the race because he is no longer trusted by the voters. Paul Ssekandi on the other hand, says his father bowed to people’s counsel to withdraw from the race.

According to Kalule, the new development gives him an upper hand against his new political opponent.

//Cue in; ‘Mzee Ssewandigi…

Cue out…..Okukanya okuliwo.”//

He is confident of winning the primaries, saying people of all ages trust him.

//Cue in: ‘Ammanyi gange…

Cue out..ekijja mu bbo,"//

Fidel Ahimbisibwe, the Lyantonde NRM Returning Officer has confirmed Ssewandigi's withdrawal from the race leaving two candidates.
