Lyantonde Resident District Commissioner-RDC, Catherine Kamwine has raised a red flag over the shoddy construction of water dams in the district.

She raised her concerns during her visit to Kiteredde village water dam construction site in Mpumudde Sub County on Monday.

Kamwine says that she was surprised by the substandard works yet the district allocated huge sums of money for the construction works.

She explains that the dam is too small, so shallow and can only hold a few liters of water, which can’t serve the entire village.

Lyantonde district allocated at least Shillings 51 million for each of the two dams scheduled for construction this year.

The other dam is scheduled for construction in Lyakajjula Sub County.

Kamwine says that she has instructed the district engineer to ensure that all the required material is delivered before she launches the construction of Lyakajjula dam.

Residents say they were excited about the news of the construction of a dam in their area, but they are no worried that the problem of water scarcity may not end because of the shoddy works.

Godfrey Mukasa, a resident faults the contractor for drilling a very shallow channel yet the dam is supposed to serve over 4 villages given the fact that the entire Mpummude Sub County is stuck with the challenge of water scarcity.

He says they have fears that the dam will not help because it is too small and asks the district to ask the contractor to repeat the works.

Paul Mwanje, another resident of Kiteredde village, says they currently trek long distances to access water for domestic use and their animals because their area is affected by water scarcity.

He says they were hopeful that the new dam would help them during the dry spell.

Mwanje suspects connivance between district authorities and contractor to mismanage funds meant for the construction of the dam, saying they are not ready to suffer the consequences of shoddy works.

He has threatened to mobilise other residents to protest the shoddy works. The Lyantonde District Engineer, Francis Kiwanuka has instructed the contractor to redo the work or else they will not receive payment.
