According to Congolese authorities, a government soldier, an inmate and two militia fighters were killed in the gunfire exchange.
Mai-Mai Militias have attacked Beni central prison in North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic-DRC and freed 244 inmates. Beni central prison is located about 7 Km from the city center. The Militias reportedly attacked Beni central prison facility on Monday morning, with the intention of freeing all the 554 inmates but only managed to free 244 inmates following a fierce gun fire exchange with government forces.
According to Congolese authorities, a government soldier, an inmate and two militia fighters were killed in the gunfire exchange. It is allegedly that the militia fighters were armed with Machetes, Knives and firearms. Colonel Richard Bizimana, the Acting Commander of the 1st sector of the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) says they tried their level best to stop the rebels who came in hundreds.
He says that they have embarked on tracking down the inmates who were freed as a well as pursue the militias. Some of the inmates were death row convicts and former rebel fighters. It is believed that the rebels decided to release the prisoners so that they can easily recruit them in their Ranks.
