MAK Don Committed to High Court for Rape Trial

Prof. Bakunetta was charged in April this year before the LDC court for allegedly having canal knowledge of his 22 year old female student without her consent. The victim whose name has been concealed, was in her first year at the University and was renting Prof Bakunettas garage within the University premises at the time he allegedly committed the offense on 29th/March 2016.
Prof. Christopher Bakunetta, the Makerere University don accused of raping a female student has been committed to High Court for trial. The Ziology professor was committed to High Court by Moses Baligeya, the Grade One magistrate of the Law Development Centre court.

It came after prosecution led by Florence Birungi, told court that they had concluded investigations into the case. According to the indictment, the prosecution said it will rely on several pieces of evidence to pin the professor.

The evidence include the knickers and dress of the victim, charge and caution statement of Prof. Bakunetta, in which he admitted having sexual intercourse with the victim with her consent , police form 3 of the victim and the neighbors' advise to her to report the incident.

Prof. Bakunetta was charged in April this year before the LDC court for allegedly having canal knowledge of his 22 year old female student without her consent. Upon committing the Makerere don, he was returned to Luzira prison where he has been in detention for the last two months. He will be incarcerated at Luzira prison until the next convenient criminal session when he will be tried.

He can apply to High Court for bail. Rape is a very grave offense in Uganda's law books and once convicted, one is liable to suffer up to the maximum punishment of death by hanging.
