Makerere University plans to hand over management of the university hospital to the College of Health Sciences as an intervention into its current ailing status.

Dr. Isaac Okullo, the Deputy Principal College of Health Sciences told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that the college has capacity to transform the facility into a fully-equipped teaching hospital.

Dr Okullo says the aim is to have doctors trained with hands-on experience to run the hospital.

When the long-awaited refurbishment and upgrading of Mulago National Referral Hospital began on October 8, 2014, most sections of the hospital services were transferred to divisional hospitals like Kawempe, Kiruddu and Naguru among others.

The renovations destabilised the Makerere College of Health Sciences which used part of the hospital as teaching space and hands-on practical training venue for students.

The university hospital which is dilapidated is likely to become a teaching hospital if the university approves the college's proposal to take it over.

Dr. Okullo further revealed that the college is ready to renovate the hospital facility as soon as the university approves the proposal to take it over.

The university hospital has over the years been ailing due to understaffing and under funding from the government. It has capacity to serve over 60,000 people including students and staff at Makerere University and the neighboring communities.

Makerere operated a small sick bay within the university until 1972 when Idi Amin expelled the Ugandan Asians. The Asians run a hospital called Nile Nursing Home. It is the premises of this hospital that university Sick Bay relocated to in 1972 with President Amin's blessing.

On 16 February 1978, President Idi Amin visited the Sick Bay and elevated it to Makerere University Hospital.
