Makerere Staff Dismiss Calls for General Assembly

The general assembly, according to the announcement released by Makerere University Academic Staff Association MUASA General Secretary, Dr Richard Walimbwa was scheduled for Friday at 2:30 PM in the university main hall.

The Makerere University striking staff have denounced a announcements  calling for an emergency general assembly. 

The general assembly, according to the announcement released by Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) General Secretary, Dr Richard Walimbwa was scheduled for Friday at 2:30 PM in the university main hall.

Dr Walimbwa accused the MUASA vice chairman who is the acting chairperson, Prof. Edward Mwavu of unilaterally calling off the planned and mutually agreed upon general assembly.

Addressing the media Mwavu after meeting leaders of other associations; Makerere Administration Staff Association (MASA) and National Union of Education Institutions (NUEI) said the resolution which caused the strike were agreed by a joint general assembly of all associations. The strike, he said, can't be called off by MUASA general assembly.

Dr Walimbwa did not pick repeated calls for a comment.

Prof Mwavu said university management has not adequately responded to their demands that led to the strike. He said they wrote to the vice-chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe on Thursday reminding him of their demands.

Prof Mwavu said staff associations have agreed to hold a joint general assembly on Monday to update the staff and find a way forward on the impasse. He also says they are also waiting for a final response from the vice chancellor.

Meanwhile, as journalist waited for the press conference, they were nearly chased out of university premises by police.

Kampala Metropolitan North Field Force Operation commander, Samuel Asiimwe told journalists that any presser in the university has to be cleared by the university public relations office.

It was until a clarification came from University Communications and International Relations Manager, Dr Mohammed Kiggundu Musoke confirming that staff association are allowed to hold press conferences at any time that police allowed the journalists.
