In a July 15th circular, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the Makerere University Deputy Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration, says students from the Fort Portal Campus are to be relocated to Makerere main campus and Jinja campus with effect from the 2016/ 2017 academic year.
Makerere University has officially closed its Fort Portal campus and relocated about 200 students and staff to the Jinja and Main Campuses. The university management is scheduled to meet students, their representatives and staff of Fort Portal Campus to tomorrow to conclude discussions on the relocation process.
In a July 15th circular, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the Makerere University Deputy Chancellor in Charge of Finance and Administration, says students from the Fort Portal Campus are to be relocated to Makerere main and Jinja campuses with effect from the 2016/ 2017 academic year.
“Every Student will be required to indicate a choice of campus for relocation,” reads the circular in part. According to the circular, students who opt to be relocated to the main campus will be offered free accommodation in the halls of residence. Those in third years will be accommodated freely for one year while those in second year will be accommodated for two years.
The university management has started arrangements to incorporate the student's leadership at Fort Portal Campus into the main guild student's administration. The closure of the Makerere University Fort portal campus comes after the university secretary, John Barugahare wrote to the vice Chancellor Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu on May 30th expressing the position of the university council on its inability to manage the branch due to financial constraints.
The Fort Portal campus was meant to serve students from Hoima, Bundibugyo, Bushenyi, Kasese, Kyenjojo, Kamwenge and Ibanda districts. Some of the courses that were being taught at the campus include Bachelor of Agribusiness Management, Bachelor of Agriculture Extension, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Statistics and Bachelor of Public Administration
