A Rwandese national who was on Monday arrested for illegally transporting tortoises, was yesterday remanded to Kisoro government prison.
A man arrested with a set of turtles on Monday has been sent on remand to Kisoro government prison.
Abdulhakim Munyaneza, in his 50’s appeared before grade two magistrate’s court presided over by Didas Mbonigaba, and pleaded guilty to transporting protected species without legal documents.
He was remanded to Kisoro government prison up to when the he will appear before a chief magistrate’s court in Kabale. Grade two magistrates court has no jurisdiction to handle his case.
Fred Lumara, the officer in charge criminal investigations department at Kisoro Police station, told court that the suspect was arrested with three tortoises heading for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Munyaneza had earlier told journalists that he hoped to raise about 150 million shillings from the sale of the tortoise in the DRC.
