Man Buried Alive In Gold Mine

John Bakyenga, the Karimunyari LC I Chairperson, says the deceased went together with four others in a gold mine on Saturday morning. He, however, says they heard them shortly after calling for help after the mine caved in and suffocated Gumisiriza to death.
An artisanal miner has been buried alive in a gold mine in Bushenyi district.  The deceased is 23-year-old Gaston Gumisiriza, a resident of Karimunyari in Kyamuhunga Sub-county.

John Bakyenga, the Karimunyari LC I Chairperson, says the deceased went together with four others in a gold mine on Saturday morning.

He, however, says they heard them shortly after calling for help after the mine caved in and suffocated Gumisiriza to death.

“We heard loud screams and rushed to see what had happened only to find miners buried under the ground. We rescued them but one was already dead,” he said.

He said Gumisiriza and his colleagues have been mining gold from the area for long.

Sula Nuwe, the Kyamuhunga sub county councilor, says gold mining has become a danger to the community.

He says open ditches have been dug everywhere in search of Gold, which exposes residents to danger.

Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police Spokesperson, says they have sealed off the area to allow for investigations into the incident.

Tumusiime, says miners have failed to embrace safety measures while looking for gold to avoid incidents of this nature.
