Edisa Nalumuli, another resident, suspects Kaye, a well-known foreman, had gone to inspect the site for possible resumption of construction work before the accident.
Police in the Kiira region are investigating the circumstances under which a man, suspected to be in his 30s, was electrocuted in Mafubira Zone A, Northern Division, Jinja City. The victim, identified only as Farouk Kaye, reportedly climbed atop an incomplete building whose construction stalled about two years ago. Moments later, a loud blast was heard before his lifeless body fell from the top of the structure.
Residents quickly alerted the police, who liaised with responsible agencies to disconnect power from the area before accessing the scene. Harriet Kawuma, a resident, described the scene as chaotic. She said the explosion sent residents fleeing in panic, only returning after calm was restored. Smoke was seen billowing from the building before Kaye’s remains were spotted on the ground.
Edisa Nalumuli, another resident, suspects Kaye, a well-known foreman, had gone to inspect the site for possible resumption of construction work before the accident. She said that although electrical wiring had been installed, prolonged rains and inactivity had likely loosened connections, posing a danger to the surrounding community.
“About three weeks ago, three children suffered electric shocks in the same building,” Nalumuli said. “They were rushed to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital and later fully recovered.” She added that residents had since locked up the site and restricted entry until safety could be guaranteed.
Mafubira ward female councillor, Amina Mirembe, urged residents to ensure proper power installations and for site owners to routinely inspect their properties. Kiira regional police spokesperson James Mubi confirmed that Kaye’s body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem before being handed over to his family for burial.
