Senegal’s star player Sadio Mane has said that the Lions of Teranga are hungry to win their first ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

Mane’s team qualified for the final of the 2019 AFCON after seeing off Tunisia 1-0 in the first semi final, before Algeria sunk Nigeria 2-1 in the second game played on Sunday night in Cairo, Egypt.

Mane, who won the 2019 UEFA Champions League title with English Premier League side Liverpool FC told URN on Monday that they are determined to re-write history and win the trophy. “Our country has never won this trophy and our coach Cisse was part of the team that lost in the final in 2002,” added Mane.

He made it clear that the title-hungry people of Senegal are all waiting for this trophy. “We have never felt anything like what will happen if Senegal wins the AFCON or World Cup. We want to be able to make this dream come true,” he added.

Mane who has netted three goals in the tournament said although facing Algeria will not be an easy task because the same side beat them 1-0 in the Group stage, he added that they mastered the art of winning games the hard way.

“It was not an easy task beating Benin at the quarterfinals and Tunisia in the semis. We know what to do because we are determined not to suffer defeat twice to the Algeria team in this tournament,” explained Mane.

But the Senegal coach Aliou Cisse who missed the last penalty when Senegal lost in the 2002 AFCON final said he is proud of his team getting this far. “Getting to the final is a very big achievement because it has been many years since our team got here. Now we must not be carried away and simply get focused to plan well to win the final game,” added Cisse.

To reach the finals, Senegal beat Kenya 3-0, lost 1-0 to Algeria and humbled Tanzania 2-0. In the round of 16, they defeated Uganda Cranes 1-0 and went on to see off a hard fighting Benin side 1-0 at the quarterfinals.

But Algerian coach Djamel Belmadi has also made it clear they are going to show more desire to win in the final on Friday at the Cairo International Stadium. “I believe we shall have over 10,000 Algerian fans in the Stadium on Friday and the whole country is eagerly waiting for this trophy to get home,” added Belmadi whose team has scored 12 goals and conceded two going into the final.

Algeria is the only team in the tournament who have scored in every match and are yet to suffer defeat. Belmadi believes having beaten Senegal in the Group stage presents even a bigger task in the final.

On July 19th will mark the climax of the 2019 AFCON which for the first time attracted 24 teams with the CECAFA region having Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi.
