Police in Rakai has arrested a 30 year old woman in a weekend operation to crack down on marijuana smokers and suppliers in the area.

Teddy Nakaweesi, a resident of Ssanje Village, Kasasa Sub-county in Rakai District, was arrested in Kyotera town council.

Nakaweesi, a mother of a one-year-old baby, was arrested for allegedly supplying marijuana. She was picked from her room following a tip off from her landlord, Godfrey Kivumbi. Police recovered several stick rolls and small sachets of crashed marijuana weighing about 4 kilograms.

Kivumbi told journalists that Nakaweesi and her husband could turn a nuisance whenever she smoked marijuana. He explains that Nakaweesi could strip naked, sit on the veranda and insult her neighbours using obscene and vulgar words in the presence of their children.

Patrick Maikula, the Officer in Charge Kyotera Police Station said Nakaweesi and her husband, who is still on the run, have been on the list of the most wanted marijuana dealers in Kyotera.

Maikula further explained that the couple had become major marijuana suppliers in Kyotera and surrounding communities and their room was used as a hideout for most of the marijuana dealers.

Nakaweesi admitted to supplying marijuana in Kyotera saying she has done the business for more than three years without being caught.

Police have always blamed weak laws for their failure to fight the problem of marijuana. The punishment for growing cannabis, the plant used to manufacture marijuana, is one year in prison or a fine of not less than one million shillings.

Cannabis, known in its narcotic state as marijuana or ganja, is a psychoactive drug. It has been used throughout history, but in recent years its use as a recreational drug has risen. The World Health Organization estimates that about four percent of the world's adult population uses cannabis annually.
