The management of Masafu General Hospital in Busia district is to decongest the facility. It follows the registration of more than 30 Covid-19 patients last week, eight of them with severe disease.

They are currently admitted in the surgical ward where they are receiving treatment. Records at the facility show that they have been receiving more than 120 patients in the outpatient department each day from Busia, Namayingo, and some parts of Mayuge district.

Hamphrence Nambiro, the administrator Masafu General hospital, says that they have observed the worst situation because they are registering between 4 to 5 Covid-19 patients each day at the health facility.

He says that they have placed much emphasis on testing each and every person visiting the casualty ward and when they present with corona like symptoms such as sore throat, cough, flu and high temperature.

Nambiro says that they have come up with measures to decongest the health center especially patients with different illnesses to stop them from contracting COVID-19.

He says that they have stopped admitting patients with other illnesses except those in critical condition that requires quick medical attention.

Joyce Nyakecho, William Ojambo and Michael Mangeni among other residents, says the decision by the hospital management is not fair because patients with other ailments may get into critical condition especially at night, which requires medical attention.

"We lost many people last year when the president restricted Boda-boda operations to 6:00 pm. People with serious illnesses that require medical attention should not be stopped from accessing the hospital because they may die when the situation worsens at night and they are in a distant place,” they said.

Benard Ojambo Odadi, a resident of Bukalkha village says that his grandmother was admitted last week with backache and chest pain. He says that according to the doctor, she was meant to spend 6 days under serious medication at the hospital but was discharged just after 2 days. He welcomed the decision by the hospital management, saying that it will safeguard many people from contracting coronavirus.
