There was drama in a council meeting convened by the Masaka District Speaker to close the year on Friday.

The Deputy Speaker, Jane Francis Nabukenya, had called the council session to discuss their annual sectoral committee reports and consider district executive committee resolutions.

However, councilors disrupted the council meeting protesting nonpayment of their allowances forcing it to abort prematurely.

It all started after when the clerk to council distributed the order paper to the councilors but they refused to adopt it, saying it hadn't included their demands.

Led by Sarah Namyalo, the Kimanya-Kyabakuza division representative, the councilors argued that they couldn't proceed with the session until their plight is attended to.

After moments of altercations between the aggrieved councilors and some members of the district executive, the speaker adjourned the sitting to calm down the flaring tampers in the council hall.

Namyalo accused the district executive of conniving with technocrats to undermine councilors and deliberately failing to honor their proposals.

She also protested the irregular appointment of the Chief Financial Officer and failure by the district to respond to queries raised about the same.

Bruno Mugumya, the Representative for Persons with Disability, said they cannot proceed with council business before their sitting allowances for the previous council sessions are cleared.

Mugumya says the district owes them allowances for three sittings. He blamed the district chairperson for deliberately avoiding their queries, saying they will block all attempts to convene any council sitting until their concerns are addressed.
