Uganda Cranes first choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango has said retiring skipper Geoffrey Massa should change his mind and play for one more year.

The former South African based striker Massa announced his retirement from the national team on Wednesday after 12 years of service. Massa who is still club-less since Baroka FC (South Africa) terminated his contract together with Khalid Aucho said he will concentrate on club football.

“The country will miss Massa. I see the team struggling until some one comes out and gives us the same work rate and confidence he was giving,” Onyango told URN online from his base in South Africa..

Cue out:…retired.”//

Onyango who has now been appointed the new captain admitted that although Massa had lately lost his sharpness at goal, his presence made life easy for other strikers like Farouk Miya to perform well. “His  leadership qualities were key for us in the 2017 Afcon qualification,” added Onyango

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper said he does not believe Uganda has a number 9 like Massa yet. “With the many World Cup and Afcon qualifying games coming, maybe the Uganda FA should have pursues Massa to delay his retirement,” added Onyango.

Massa became the second player to skipper the national team to the Afcon after Jimmy Kirunda in 1978.

Uganda Cranes technical team headed by coach Milutin ‘Micho' Sredojevic will now have the task solving the striking line problem. The Uganda Cranes are still in contention for a place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup as they are second behind Egypt. The group also has Ghana and Congo Brazzaville.
