The incumbent woman Member of Parliament for Mbarara, Miria Matembe, accuses the Electoral Commission for failing to educate the public about party symbols and colors.
Matembe says people are ignorant about what the symbols mean, the parties they represent and how and when they can be used. She says some members of the National Resistance Movement have told people in Mbarara that her election symbol is a cockroach. Matembe says the claims are derogatory and aimed at spoiling her name ahead of the February 23rd vote.

The symbol of a cockroach carries many negative connotations among the people of western Uganda. During the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, the Hutu government openly called the Tutsi population cockroaches in an attempt to degrade them.
Miria Matembe, who has served the people of Mbarara in parliament since 1996, is running against Emma Boona of the National Resistance Movement. Matembe is an independent candidate.
