Mayiga emphasized the link between drug abuse and the spread of HIV, saying those under dugs influence are more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviours
The Katikkiro of
Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has issued a strong warning to the youth
regarding the dangers of drug abuse, highlighting its correlation with criminal
behavior and the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
Mayiga stressed that narcotic drugs provide no benefits to those who misuse them; rather, they take control
of individuals' minds, often resulting in harm to themselves and to others.
He referenced a
recent tragic incident in Masaka, where a young man, influenced by drugs and
armed with a machete, killed three relatives.
The Katikkiro emphasized the connection between drug abuse and the spread of HIV, arguing
that individuals under the influence of drugs are more likely to engage in
risky sexual behaviors.
He noted that this
not only leads to unwanted pregnancies but also heightens the risk of
contracting the deadly HIV/AIDS virus.
He made the remarks during his address to young people participating in Buganda Kingdom’s 2025
Ekisakaate at St. Janan Secondary School in Bombo, Luwero District.
In line with this
year’s theme, “Integrating Culture and Technology,” Mayiga also cautioned the
youth about the misuse of social media, urging them to use their phones solely
for positive research.
