Over 100 Water Meters Vandalized in Mbale

Tukei says that the criminals often attack at night, vandalise the meters and leave the water to flow, an act that he says has caused financial losses of more than 20 million Shillings to National Water in a space of two weeks.

More than 100 water meters have been vandalised in Mbale district over the last two weeks. This was confirmed by Elgon Regional Community Liaison Officer ASP John Robert Tukei, after a meeting with staff of National Water and Sewerage Corporation this afternoon.

Tukei says that the ‘criminals' often attack at night, vandalise the meters and leave the water to flow, an act that he says has caused financial losses of more than 20 million Shillings to National Water in a space of two weeks.

The most affected areas include Kikyafu in Nkoma, Namatala, some parts of Bugema and Nkokonjeru. Tukei says that such actions tantamount to sabotaging Government programs.

Agnes Aketch, the general manager of National Water and Sewerage Corporation in Mbale confirmed the rampant meter vandalisation. Brian Taremwa, the Mbale branch manager says they have filed a case at Mbale Police Station over vandalisation of water meters by unknown people.

Teremwa also said they have embarked on sensitizing the public on the dangers of vandalizing the water meters.
