1550 teachers in Mbarara Municipality are protesting the delayed payment of their March salaries. Ben Twahairwe, the Chairman Uganda National Teacher's Union-UNATU Mbarara municipality branch, says the teachers are struggling to survive due to the delayed payment of their salaries.
According to Twahairwe, most of the teachers are struggling to service their bank loans, clear fees for their children and prepare for the Easter festivities. Julius Kato Magara, one of the affected teachers asks the authorities to wake up and ensure they receive their pay in time.
Mbarara Town Clerk, Edward Lwanga blames the delayed payment of the teachers on delays by the Finance Ministry. Lwanga says they are engaging the Finance Ministry to ensure the teacher's salaries are released.
