Uganda Cranes tactician Milutin ‘Micho' Sredojevic has today named a 40-man provisional squad ahead of the 2017 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The competition will take place in four cities of Gabon between January 14 to February 5th. "We have announced squad of 40 players who will compete for the 23 final places,” said Sredojevic.
The Uganda Cranes who qualified for the competition after 39 years of waiting are grouped alongside Ghana, Egypt and Mali. The four teams will be based in the Port Gentil.
Sredojevic said they have selected a blend of experience and youth who are the future of Ugandan football. “No body will be gifted and awarded a place. All players must work hard to earn a place to be on the final squad,” he added.
Striker Emmanuel Arnold Okwi who has been in and out of the Cranes has been left out because he has not been active with his Sønderjyske side in Denmark. The local players invited include; goalkeepers Isma Watenga, benjamin Ochan, Nicholas Wadada, Joseph Ochaya, Hassan Wasswa Mawanda and Vitalis Tabu among others.
The team is expected to start serious before Christmas before traveling to face Tunisia and Libya in International friendly game before winding up against Afcon defending champions on January 11th in Dubai.
