Uganda Cranes head coach, Milutin ‘Micho' Sredojevic has named Germany based Lorenzo Melvin on the squad that will start preparations ahead of the 2017 Afcon qualifier away to Botswana.
The Cranes will face Botswana away on June 4th in a crucial Group D qualifier. It is the first time Sredojevic calls the 21-year old Werder Bremen player who reportedly accepted to feature for Uganda although he has spent many years in Germany.
“We have selected players who we are sure will fight for the nation. The team will start training next week before we reduce the number and head to Zimbabwe for an international friendly,” said Sredojevic during a press conference at the FUFA headquarters in Mengo.
The Cranes are second in Group D with seven points just like Burkina Faso who have a better head to head since they beat Uganda 1-0. Iraq based midfielder Hassan Wasswa Mawanda who features for Al Shorta has also been named on the team together with Mike Azira who plies his trade in the US with Colorado Rapids.
Rwanda based Davis Kasirye who has been in good form has also been called to the team together with Farouk Miya and Emmanuel Okwi who ply their trade in Belgium and Denmark respectively. Uganda last featured in the Afcon finals in 1978 when it was held in Ghana.
