The 54th Independence Day celebrations for Kabarole district turned into a campaign platform for two aspiring women contestants.

Peace Mutuzo, the State Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development and Rose Mary Byabasaija, the Kabarole Deputy Resident District Commissioner, openly expressed their ambitions to represent Bunyangabu district.

Bunyangabu County in Kabarole district was last year granted district status, but will begin operating in the 2017/2018 financial year.

When both officials were given an opportunity to address the guests, they instead declared their intentions to contest for the district Woman parliamentary seat.

Byabasaija, who was the first to speak, told the residents of Rwimi that she will next year resign her position and contest. She explained that she has served as a public servant for a long time and wants to join politics and serve the people of Bunyangabu.

Byabasaija added that the electorate should not vote Mutuzo, because she has just been appointed minister.

Mutuzo, who was the chief guest at the celebrations, said that she was the right person to lead the people of Bunyangabu and a loyal member of the National Resistance Movement –NRM party.

She also requested Byabasaija to stand down for her and promised to lobby the President to promote her to full RDC.

In last year's National Resistance-NRM party primaries, Mutuzo contested but lost the primaries to Sylvia Rwabwogo, the Woman MP Kabarole district. Mutuzo however declined to contest as an independent candidate in the general elections.  In July, President Museveni appointed Mutuzo a minister.

Prior to joining politics, Mutuzo was the welfare officer in State House.

During the celebrations held at Kitere Primary School, Rwimi Sub County, local leaders used the occasion to remind the central government and the district leadership about the deteriorating state of social services in the area.

Moses Kangwagye, the LC3 Chairperson Rwimi Sub County said that the entire sub county lacks clean water, forcing residents to use water from crater lakes and other sources, which are often contaminated with human and animal waste.

Unlike several districts which cancelled the independence anniversary celebrations to enable leaders attend the main event in Luuka district, the celebrations in Kabarole were graced by all district officials who included the RDC, LC5 Chairperson, Chief Administrative Officer, LC3 Chairpersons and district councillors.

Steven Asiimwe, the Kabarole Resident District Commissioner, says they did not receive directives not to organise the event on the same day as the national celebrations.
