The Ministry of Health is set to roll out the use of a new polio vaccine in Uganda beginning April 18th.

At the beginning of April, Uganda concluded a nationwide polio vaccination that the Ministry of health said was prompted by outbreaks in the neighboring countries.

According to Dr. Akena, another sub-national polio vaccination campaign targeting 61 districts in Uganda will commence on April 18 using the new injectable polio vaccine.

Grace Adong, a mother of two told Uganda Radio Network from Kitgum Hospital that she is worried there are too many polio vaccines being administered over short periods of time. She said unless properly convinced, she won't allow her children receive the new vaccine through injection.

The World Health Assembly and the World Health Organization have adopted a new strategy aimed at global eradication of the disease beginning April 29th when all countries are expected to conduct another house to house polio vaccination using the new injectible polio vaccine.

The World Health organization says the transition in the vaccines used to eradicate polio requires the removal of all oral polio vaccines (OPVs) in the long term to completely eliminate the risks of vaccine-associated paralytic polio among others.
