A mob in Yumbe Town Council has raided the Central Police Station to demand the handover of a suspected murderer.

The mob of more than 200 people last evening demanded the release of Bashir Kavuma, a suspect in the killing of Karim Azabo, a guard at Yumbe Shell Petrol Station. They pitched camp at the police station demanding that the District Police Commander handover Kavuma for punishment.

The police were powerless against the mob. Ten police officers deployed to stop the rioting were injured in clashes with the mob and several people broke into the police station, vandalizing it and destroying case files.

Calm was restored at around 7:00pm when the mobile police team from Arua and Moyo arrived in Yumbe.

Maxwell Ogwal, the District Police Commander, says Bashir Kavuma was arrested in Arua. He says that when news of the arrest broke in Yumbe there was a public outcry and the violence begun soon after.

Henry Alyang, the West Nile police spokesman, says Kavuma was moved back to Arua.

This is the second incident of the kind in the past six months.

In October last year a mob besieged Arua central police station demanding for Lucky Apio, a woman accused of murder. The police successfully dispersed the crowd that was baying for her blood.
