A mob on Thursday set ablaze a vehicle
belonging to suspected cattle thieves in Kikuube district. The incident happened in Nyatende cell, Kigaaya ward in
Buhimba town council.
It is alleged that the unidentified suspects while driving a vehicle
registration number UBL 139Y Toyota Wish raided a kraal belonging to Moses Timbigamba,
the Chairperson LCI of Nyatende village. They reportedly stole one cow from his
kraal which they tied and loaded in the car they were travelling in.
However, before they could flee,
area residents blocked the road and surrounded them. The residents sounded an
alarm that attracted other residents.
The suspects fled
abandoning the car and the suspected stolen cow. The angry mob later set the
car on fire.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson said that the car wreckage was towed to Kikuube central police station.
Peter Bigirwa, a resident of Kyangwali sub-county in Kikuube says police should intensify operations to ensure that
cattle theft is no more in the area. He said that since October, the
district has suffered rampant cattle theft with most farmers crying foul.
According to farmers, more than 50 cows have been stolen in the district since October.
