Two suspected thieves have been killed in Kalagala Sub County in Luweero as residents protest a reported increase in cattle thefts and the alleged failure by the police to prosecute suspects.

The deceased; Farouk Musisi also known as Bukenya and another only identified as Juma, were meat sellers in Zirobwe Sub County. They were rounded up in an operation mounted by the residents at Kakoni village in Kalagala Sub County following the theft of two cows belonging to one William Kiwanuka.

Fatefully, the two victims were found slaughtering one of the cows and in vengeance residents attacked, and stoned them to death. They later set ablaze their motorcycle registration number UDU 336C, according to Samuel Kiwanuka, the defense secretary of Kakoni village.

The bodies were eventually transferred to Kampala City Council Authority Mortuary while the motorcycle wreckage was taken to Vumba Police post.

Siraje Buyinza, a resident explains that such acts of mob justice are resurfacing because people have lost confidence in the police. He adds that over the last two months, at least 20 head of cattle have been stolen from different homes in the same village.

Luweero District Chairman Abdul Nadduli condoned the public action arguing that the people are fed up because oftentimes the suspects are freed moments after their arrest, and no trial has ever been fruitful.  Nadduli further warned that this was just the beginning of a massive mob campaign to eradicate thefts from Luweero.

But Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Lameck Kigozi condemned the killings saying residents had denied police vital information which could have led to the arrest all the people in clique. Kigozi further explains that four of the suspected thieves escaped the attack.
