The rape and strangulation of a four-year-old girl Hailat Nakigunda in Kajaguzo village has triggered a series of events leading to police firing live bullets to save the property of a suspect.

The emergency police action happened this Saturday morning in Kajaguzo village. Police had to fire live bullets and teargas to stop an enraged mob that had attacked the home of George William Wamala.

Wamala is the prime suspect in the rape and killing of four-year-old Nakiganda on Thursday morning. Wamala is neighbours with the family of the girl.

Nakiganda was the daughter of Muhammad Sembatya and Immaculate Nabukeera.

Kajaguzo village is located in Kirumba Sub County in Rakai district.

This morning, angry residents raided Wamala’s home and vandalized his house before setting it ablaze after they discovered two graves. They also slashed his banana and coffee plantations.

Badru Mujuzi, the Kalisizo Rural sub county LC3 councilor says residents were enraged after Wamala failed to explain the people who were buried in the two graves that were found in his home. He says residents unsuccessfully tasked Wamala to identify the people who were buried there and when they were buried.

Mujuzi says the residents assaulted Wamala after he failed to explain how the deceased’s dress ended up at his home.

Fred Sooma, the Rakai District Police Commander has condemned the mob action. He says police had to use teargas to disperse the residents and arrest the suspect.

Sooma says police is holding Wamala as a prime suspect in the rape and murder case because on the day the deceased’s body was found, a sniffer dog led police to his home. He says anti riot police has deployed heavily at Wamala’s home to protect his remaining properties.

Sooma says no suspect has been arrested in connection to the mob attack. Immaculate Nabukeera, the victim’s mother says she was shocked by the brutal murder of her daughter. Nabukeera says until now she has failed to figure out the motive of the murder of her daughter.

By the time of filing this story, security had restored calm in Kirumba. Wamala has not yet commented on the accusation against him.
