Police in Kitgum are investigating the circumstances under which two money safes went missing from a bullion van in transit from Kampala to Kitgum.
Two Money safes containing millions of shillings went missing yesterday, while in transit on a Stanbic bullion van, guarded by the Group 4 Security guards.
Charles Oumo, the Kitgum district police commander says that the guards escorting the bullion van registration number UAE 825Q, claimed that the money safes could have dropped off along the Gulu-Kitgum 100 km road stretch.
The guards say they discovered the bullion van door was open shortly after they offloaded some of the money at Stanbic Branch in Gulu. One of the safes was picked by a driver of a passenger service Taxi, who was driving right behind the bullion van.
The driver drove to Kitgum Central police station and handed over the safe with its contents. Efforts to trace the second safe proved futile.
Police have arrested all the occupants on the bullion van for further interrogation.
