Ugandan fishermen continue fleeing Lake Albert following persistent attacks by suspected Congolese militiamen. The latest group of fishermen vacated the lake last week and relocated to Lake Victoria and Lake Edward.

The affected fishermen are from Kaiso, Sebogoro, Kyehoro and Nkondo landing site from Hoima Kikuube and Buliisa districts. By this morning, several fishermen had assembled their fishing gear and boats at Kaiso and Kyehoro landing sites in Hoima and Kikuube districts ready to relocate to Lake Victoria.

Simon Irumba, a fisherman at Kyehoro landing site in Kikuube district, says the fishermen cannot withstand the rampant attacks by the Congolese militia.

Ugandan fishermen have repeatedly faced attacks from suspected Congolese Militiamen. The Congolese fishermen confiscate boats, nets, engines and batteries from Ugandan fishermen.

The attack occurred on Tuesday last week near Fofo Nana and Rwentale landing sites in Tonya parish Buseruka sub county Hoima district where Ugandan fishermen lost several boats, engines, fishing nets and fish among others.

In November this year, Congolese militiamen gunned down twelve Ugandan fishermen in two separate attacks on Lake Albert near Kaiso landing site in Hoima district. Five bodies of the Ugandan fishermen are still trapped at Tara landing site in Njugu zone Ituri province in the Eastern DRC Congo.
