Uganda has made a false start at the 2018 Tennis Fed Cup falling to Morocco 3-0 in the first match played in Ulcinj Bellevue, Montenegro yesterday.
The team making it's first appearance in the competition lost two singles and one doubles in the Fed Cup Euro/Africa Group 3 tournament. The team handled by veteran John Oduke and comprises of Sandra Khissa, Winnie Birungi, Daphine Namulinde Mukasa and Patience Athieno is meant to battle Malta and Ireland in the next games.
The Fed Cup by BNP Paribas is the premier international team competition in women's tennis, it is also the world's largest annual women's international team sports competition - in terms of the number of nations that compete.
Uganda's appearance in an international event comes after the Uganda tennis Association (UTA) was readmitted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Confederation of African tennis (CAT) after clearing a debt on affiliation fees of 81 million Uganda Shillings (US$ 22,500) that had accumulated over a five year period.
The 2018 Europe/ Africa Zone Group III which started on Monday and ends April 21st is split into two events - one in Tunisia and one in Montenegro. Uganda is in Pool B alongside South Africa, Finland, Ireland, Morocco, Malta, Kenya, Cameroon, Mozambique and Andorra.
The winners of each pool will then play-off against each other to determine which nation will advance to Europe/Africa II in 2019.
