The police officer accused of raping a woman who had gone to Police seeking refuge has been remanded to prison.

Corporal Moses Steven Ebu appeared before the grade one magistrate of Moroto  James Opio on Wednesday.

Court heard that on the 12th of March Corporal Stephen Moses Ebu while on duty at Camp Swahili police post in Moroto Municipality raped a woman who had gone to seek police help after failing to get means to take her to Amudat district where she was going.Corporal  Ebu could not be allowed to take plea because of the grave nature of his case.

While reading the charge, Grade one magistrate Mr. James Opio told the accused person that his court does not have jurisdiction to handle the case since it is capital in nature.

"Your case is capital in nature so your plea will be heard before the high court,” Mr. James Opio told the accused Ebu.

The concerned women welcomed the remand of the officer and appealed for maximum punishment to deter other officers who might also be tempted to commit the same offence.

Florence Losike one of the women activist in Moroto said they are ready to follow up on the case till justice prevails.

"We are just in shock for a whole police officer who is supposed to protect civilians to turn out to be a threat to the civilians, now where should we go?" she asked.

Patricia Lomuria, another woman said the police needs to take the raped woman for HIV/ Aids test adding that the accused man's status might not be healthy.

"I would like to appeal the police doctors at least to do a blood taste for the raped woman and the officer so that in case the woman was infected she can be put on emergency treatment," she said
