Unidentified Panga-wielding thugs have attacked a family, killing a mother and leaving the father and daughter in a life-threatening condition at Mifunya village, Nakaseke Sub-County in Nakaseke district.

The killlers broke into the home at 3.am using an axe and wielding pangas, and killed Cotrida Nakabiito in her late 50s. The deceased's injured daughter is Goretti Ssannyu, 16, and her father who is the late Cotrida is Azima Odia, is his late 60s.

It’s reported that the the attackers first hacked the mother to death and also hacked the father and daughter, after which they took off, without taking any property from the home, an indication that they just came to take life.

Recounting the ordeal, Mifunya village Local Council 1 Chairperson Samuel Kato tells Uganda Radio Network URN that people knocked on his door at around 4.am reporting that a tragedy had befallen the village.   After opening, he sighted a person seriously injured and being supported to seat on a motorcycle, and after learning about the development, he asked the rider to rush her to hospital for medical attention.

Responding to the alarm moments later, he says they found the family head meters away in the home garden also fighting for his life with stab wounds, a sign that the attackers dropped him there before taking off.

Benjamin Makanga, the district Councilor for Nakaseke Sub-County attributes the attack to marijuana smoking youths related to the family, saying there have also been accusations of witch-craft tendencies in the family, but URN couldn’t independently verify these claims.

Police have recovered a blood-stained axe from the scene of crime and taken it as an exhibit. The motive behind the attack was still unclear. URN has learnt that the body of the deceased and the injured persons have been taken to Nakaseke General Hospital for an autopsy and medical attention respectively.

Savannah Regional Police publicist Isah Ssemwogerere tells URN that although he has learnt about the development, he was still waiting for a comprehensive report from the scene of crime officers.

Late in August this year, two policemen identified as Simon Ebong and Alfred Juster, all deployed to guard Jiu Zhou Stone Company Uganda Limited located at Lule Ward in Semuto Town Council in Nakaseke were seriously injured after 10 thugs armed with a pump action gun and machetes robbed a Chinese quarry.

The suspected robbery attack occurred at around 9:10pm after the thugs also disappeared with an unknown sum of money from the company.

Edward Katumba, a resident, said that a number of armed thugs raided the company and cut the two policemen who were guarding the quarry after they robbed them of their guns.

Isah Ssemwogerere the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson said that later, Police recovered the guns and made some arrests.
