Journalists under Bushenyi Journalists and Media Association are up in arms against Odo Tayebwa, the Ishaka Municipality MP for assaulting a radio presenter. Tayebwa is accused of beating up Moses Byendwa alias Shaka-Bitama, a presenter at Bushenyi Model FM last week.

It is alleged that Tayebwa stormed the station when Byendwa picked read his comments on the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development project in Bushenyi in news papers during the weekly press review, where the MP was quoted saying the project was not helping residents and should be stopped.

Shortly after reading the MPs comments, Byendwa invited comments from listeners. Some of the listeners reportedly made harsh comments, which angered the legislators prompting him to drive to the radio station and attack Byendwa. Through their umbrella body Bushenyi Journalists and Media Association, the journalists have petitioned Isaac Kawooya, the Bushenyi Resident District Commissioner against the conduct of the MP.

In their petition handed over to the RDC by Pison Mugizi, the chairperson Bushenyi Journalists and Media Association, the journalists are demanding for an apology from the legislator and a commitment from the RDC to protect journalists and media practitioners in the course of their work. The petitioners also want Tayembwa to apologize publicly to his voters for disappointing them as their representative in parliament.

The journalists have given the legislator up to 18th May 2014, to apologize to journalists or else they petition the speaker of parliament.  However, Tayebwa denies assaulting journalists saying they are being used by his opponents to tarnish his name.
