Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Introduces Garbage collection Fees, Scouts to Address Poor Waste Disposal

Starting this month, the town council has prohibited the crude dumping of garbage outside residential compounds or business premises. Residents will now be required to pay a fee of 100 Ugandan Shillings per kilogram of waste collected.
Authorities in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, Kasese District, have introduced garbage collection fees in a bid to improve waste management in the area.

Starting this month, the town council has prohibited the crude dumping of garbage outside residential compounds or business premises. Residents will now be required to pay a fee of 100 Ugandan Shillings per kilogram of waste collected.

Moses Mugisa, the town clerk, stated that the primary goal of the levy is to address poor waste disposal practices, which have led to the accumulation of garbage in various parts of the town. A mobile vehicle will regularly collect waste from homes and business premises, and any resident found dumping garbage in unauthorized locations will be apprehended and fined.

To further enforce proper waste disposal, the town council will deploy scouts to monitor the area. Selevest Masereka Mapoze, the LC3 chairperson, highlighted that the town’s growing population has brought challenges like waste management. He also emphasized that the collected fees will help maintain the garbage truck and keep the town clean.

Batamuliza Annet, a worker in the town council, supported the initiative but called for close monitoring to prevent residents from illegally dumping garbage in water trenches at night to avoid the fee.
