The Defense and Internal Affairs Committee have started gathering information on the recent fighting in Kasese district. The Committee members held a closed door meeting with Kasese district officials in the RDC's board room on Friday evening.

The officials included the Resident District Commissioner, Major James Mwesigye, deputy RDC, Justine Muhindo, District Speaker, Johnson Bwerere, District Police Commander, Samuel Odongo and District Internal Security Officer-DISO,

Captain James Katarangye.

The committee met separately Brigadier Peter Elwelu, the 3rd Division commander. Elwelu led the offensive against Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere's palace, which led to the death of 46 royal guards and arrest of 139 others.

Gilbert Olulayah, a member of the committee and Shadow Information Minister for Defense, told URN that the information from leaders in district portrays a different picture from what they have gathered in Kampala.

He however, declined to reveal details of the information, saying it will help the committee members to understand the clashes before they compile their report.

Oulanyah says the committee will compile and present its report to parliament before the Christmas break.

The committee has so far met Internal Affairs Minister, Jeje Odongo, former Defense minister, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) General Katumba Wamala, the assistant IGP, Asuman Mugenyi and Police spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

On Thursday legislators questioned the role of General Katumba Wamala in the Kasese clashes. The CDF reportedly said he was in Kampala when the offensive was launched, adding that he only communicated to those on ground on phone.

The legislators are said to have questioned the CDF whether he had been sidelined in the operation.
