Opposition Members of Parliament have tasked the government to
respect press freedom and call to order the Uganda Communications Commission
(UCC) over directives requiring media houses to suspend staff.

Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said that as the world prepares to
commemorate Press Freedom day on Friday, UCC is issuing draconian orders to
suspend journalists for covering the arrest of Kyadondo East MP Robert
Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Ssemujju said that battering journalists and abuse of freedom of
the media could only attract fortune hunters, not tourists. He demanded that
government briefs parliament about the developments in the media industry.
