Police in Pader are investigating a case in which an MTN staff member was yesterday shot by armed men in Lira Palwo Sub County in Agago district.

James Opiyo, who supplies airtime in Abim, Agago, Kotido and Pader was yesterday shot around 3:00pm by unknown gunmen from Alwekeyo village in Adine Parish at the border of Agago and Pader districts.

According to the Aswa regional police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema, the victim was shot in the stomach while he was riding a motorbike. Okema said that the victim who is currently nursing injuries at Kalongo hospital did not realize that he had been shot until he fell off his bike after riding for nearly another 100 metres.

Opiyo was then rushed by the police to Kalongo hospital where the bullet was removed from his stomach. On rushing to the scene police recovered three catridges in the area where Opiyo was shot.

The case was registered under SD number 44/25/11/2014.

Okema now says that investigations are ongoing to find out the circumstances under which the salesman was shot at and who could be behind the shooting.

He appealed to members of the community in Alwekeyo village to help police with investigations.

Although he had an unspecified amount of money and airtime in his bag, none of it was taken from Opiyo.

Okema appealed to telecom companies to provide adequate security for their staff members who have to travel long distances on their own. Okema noted that some sales agents carry on them airtime cards worth 20 million shillings.
