Mugabe Suffers Defeat in Azerbaijan

Uganda's top tennis player, Duncan Kasumba Mugabe failed to make it to the medal bracket at the on-going 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.

On Saturday evening he lost to Amine Ahounda (Mauritius) in a quarter final match. Mugabe who stopped two players in the earlier rounds battled in the first set before failing to break Ahounda's hard serves to fall 7-5 and later 6-3.

Top player Altug Celikbileka (Turkey), Sergey Fomins (Azerbaijan), Mubarak Zayid (Qatar) and Irana's Vala Amir all marched on to the semi final stage.

The two remaining Ugandan athletes Shida Leni (200m women) and Salim Abu Mayanja (1500m men) also failed to win medals in their respective races on Saturday. Only Halimah Nakaayi won Uganda a silver medal in the 800m race.

The Games that brought together over 1000 athletes from 57 countries will climax on Monday.  Uganda entered athletes in tennis, athletics, swimming, weightlifting and Zurkhaneh.

Mugabe, lady swimmer Avice Kakayi Meya and track and field runner Nakaayi are some of the star athletes who represented Uganda.

The games, which were started in 2005 in Saudi Arabia, aim to emphasize Islamic unity and solidarity through sports.
