Kyotera District Chairperson Patrick Kintu Kisekulo and his counterpart Robert Benon Mugabi of Rakai have lost the National Resistance Movement  (NRM) party primaries.

Kisekulo was defeated by Charles Lubega Zziriddamu, the Kalisizo town councillor, according to results released by Benjamin Lugaaju, the NRM Electoral Commission-Returning Officer.

Kisekulo’s supporters had initially expected a walk-over in the race after claiming that Zziridamu was a weak candidate.  But after the final tally of the polls held on Friday, Zziriddamu had collected 29,648 votes while Kisekulo scored 14,068 votes.

Zziridamu says that the victory gives him an upper-hand over his opponents in the 2021 general elections. He says that the District office is meant for effective service delivery which Kisekulo failed to accomplish during his tenure. He appealed to Kisekulo to support him in the upcoming general elections for the good of the party.

Maj. David Matovu, the Kyotera Resident District commissioner, said that although the elections were peaceful, they deployed heavily at the tally centre to contain possible clashes between Zziridamu and Kisekulo’s supporters.   He added that the NRM is planning a meeting between the different candidates before the general elections, to ensure that the country witnesses a peaceful exercise.
